Good morning, Geauga County. From abandoned railways to vibrant community spaces, transformation is the theme sweeping across Northeast Ohio this summer. Solon's ambitious "District" development project has secured a critical extension until September, keeping alive the vision that captivated nearly 80% of voters in 2019. While high interest rates have delayed groundbreaking until potentially 2026, the promise of a walkable destination with high-end apartments, retail spaces, and a food hall continues to generate excitement among residents eager for community-centered development.

Meanwhile, nature enthusiasts won't have to wait nearly as long for outdoor recreation as Solon's Rails to Trails project nears completion. The first four-mile stretch connecting to Chagrin Falls opens mid-August, fulfilling Mayor Kraus's eight-year vision that began with a simple observation of empty rail lines. Against this backdrop of progress, East Cleveland faces another leadership challenge with Mayor Shabazz dismissing Police Chief Lundy over appointment irregularities and alleged investigative compromises.

πŸ™οΈ Solon's ambitious mixed-use development project receives critical extension. Developers of The District at Solon have been granted until September 30 to complete underground remediation at the former Liberty Ford and Solon Motel sites. The project, approved by nearly 80% of voters in 2019, will transform 22 acres into a vibrant community featuring 200 high-end apartments, retail space, a food hall, and a hotel. Despite challenges like high interest rates and construction costs, city officials remain optimistic about a potential 2026 groundbreaking. The development aims to provide housing for local professionals while creating a walkable destination that benefits both residents and businesses.

πŸš“ East Cleveland's new mayor fires police chief over legal violations. Lateek Shabazz terminated Acting Chief Kenneth Lundy less than a week after taking office, citing improper appointment without required civil service exams. The termination letter also mentioned Lundy's romantic involvement with a homicide witness, which compromised a murder investigation. This firing adds to a series of scandals that have plagued East Cleveland's police department, where more than a dozen officers have been convicted on various charges. Shabazz took office following a legal battle after former Mayor Brandon King was suspended and later convicted on corruption charges.

πŸ₯Ύ Solon transforms abandoned railways into hiking paradise this summer. The first phase of the Rails to Trails project, connecting Solon to Chagrin Falls with a four-mile path, is set to open mid-August. Mayor Eddy Kraus initiated the project eight years ago after noticing empty rail lines, responding to the 80% of residents who prioritized trail development in community surveys. The trails aim to promote physical and mental health benefits while creating a safe outdoor space separated from vehicle traffic. Future plans include a bridge over the Chagrin River to be constructed by Cleveland Metroparks in 2026.
