Good morning, Geauga County. Imagine a world without property taxes. That's the bold vision Lake County Mayor John Marra is proposing, suggesting homeownership shouldn't feel like "permanent rent." While critics worry about funding for schools and townships, Marra contends there are more equitable alternatives that could distribute costs while preserving local control—a conversation that's bound to spark debate across kitchen tables throughout Northeast Ohio.

Meanwhile, regional institutions are adapting to economic realities in different ways. Lake Erie College is streamlining its academic framework to focus on high-demand fields, responding directly to workforce needs in our region. And in the financial sector, Cleveland's Journey Wealth is expanding its footprint into Akron through a strategic acquisition of Auxin Group—another sign that Northeast Ohio's business landscape continues to evolve despite challenging economic times.

🏠 Ohio mayor argues property taxes can be abolished without harming services. John Marra, a mayor in Lake County, claims that eliminating property taxes wouldn't destroy schools and townships as critics suggest. He contends the current system is outdated, complex, and essentially turns homeownership into "permanent rent." Marra proposes alternatives like voter-approved local income taxes or per-person service fees that would distribute costs more equitably. He argues these approaches would protect seniors on fixed incomes, ensure all adults contribute fairly, and eliminate bureaucratic overhead while preserving local control.
