Geauga County • May 8, 2025
Good morning, Geauga County. Behind the statistics of every crime lies a human story, and the tragic case of Juvar King reminds us of this sobering reality. The 46-year-old Warren man's death has officially been ruled a homicide after his body was discovered on an East Cleveland porch last month—a case that continues to unfold as investigators seek answers while one suspect faces charges for burning King's abandoned car.
Meanwhile, the voice of democracy echoed loudly through Pepper Pike ballot boxes as voters decisively rejected proposed charter changes that would have significantly altered the balance of power between mayor and council. And at Crestwood schools, the future looks bright with exciting developments across all grade levels—from newly secured STEAM grants to expanded music opportunities for fifth graders and potential schedule adjustments that could shift school start times by just a few minutes this fall.

💔 Warren man's death ruled homicide after body found on porch. Juvar King, 46, died from a gunshot wound to the head according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner. His body was discovered on March 17 at an abandoned house in East Cleveland, weeks after he was reported missing from Warren in February. The car King had been driving was later found abandoned and burning in Cleveland. While police arrested 28-year-old Nathaniel Christian Crockett for the car arson, no arrests have been announced for King's murder.
🗳️ Pepper Pike voters crush proposed charter changes in landslide vote. Residents overwhelmingly rejected Issue 17, with nearly 66% voting against the new city charter that would have significantly reduced mayoral powers. The defeated proposal sought to allow council to remove the mayor without approval, eliminate the mayor's role in council meetings and the planning commission, and create a new council president position. Mayor Richard Bain called the result an "affirmation of satisfaction" with the current government, while Councilman Gentile, who introduced the ordinance, expressed disappointment and plans to analyze what happened.
🏫 Crestwood School Board gets exciting updates from all district levels. Principal Ducca announced teacher Monica Grebb secured $2,500 in grants for STEAM challenges and the One Book, One School program. Principal Freitag-Geiger revealed fifth graders will soon have choir and band options, while Principal McMahon highlighted student achievements including Ethan Thompson's Skills USA competition success. Superintendent Curtis outlined three key initiatives: streamlining the district's mission statement, creating a "Portrait of a Graduate" program, and updating the strategic plan—along with proposed schedule adjustments that would shift school start times by 5-7 minutes beginning this fall.
