Geauga County • April 16, 2025
Good morning, Geauga County. Look up at the Painesville skyline and you'll notice a transformation in progress. The Crile Road water tower is getting a complete makeover, trading its weathered exterior for a fresh dark green coat in a project that will continue through the end of May. Meanwhile, the surrounding land is being cleared for future development—a visible symbol of renewal happening throughout our community.
Speaking of renewal, local success story Nate Mitchell has turned a side hustle into something remarkable. What began as extra income while working as a Geauga County sheriff's deputy has blossomed into Blue Lake Cleaning, now employing 14 people and recently honored as the Chamber's Small Business of the Year. Just down the road, Cleveland Heights is tackling traffic safety with innovative design changes that have already reduced speeds by 7 mph in some neighborhoods—proving sometimes the most effective solutions aren't about enforcement but reimagining what already exists.

🧹 From sheriff's deputy to award-winning cleaning business owner. Nate Mitchell founded Blue Lake Cleaning in 2016 as a side job while working for the Geauga County Sheriff's Department. Mitchell's entrepreneurial success was recently recognized when Blue Lake Cleaning received the Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce's 2025 Small Business of the Year Award. What started as a way to earn additional income has transformed into a thriving local business.
🚗 Cleveland Heights tackles deadly streets with new safety plan. After 7,000 crashes and 20 deaths in the past decade, the city adopted a Comprehensive and Equitable Safety Action Plan to prevent future tragedies. The initiative, funded by $1 million in federal grants, will implement traffic calming measures including bike lanes, high-visibility crosswalks, and speed humps in high-risk areas. City officials emphasize that design changes—not just enforcement—are key to controlling speeding on streets that "look like highways." Initial traffic calming efforts have already reduced speeds by 6-7 mph in some neighborhoods.
