🏘 Glenville revival

Geauga County • March 11, 2025

Good morning, Geauga County. Just one mile from University Circle's bustling job center, a $13.25 million investment is breathing new life into Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood. Wade Park Station will soon offer 40 affordable apartments for seniors across from the historic Hough Bakery site, bringing fresh energy to an area that's weathered three decades of economic challenges since the beloved bakery closed its doors in 1992.

While some institutions face difficult transitions – like Lakeland Community College's elimination of 24 faculty positions amid budget concerns – individual triumph reminds us of human resilience. Take Sumica Williams, whose learning disabilities in the 1960s led to institutional placement rather than support. Years later, with the right accommodations, she achieved a remarkable 98% on her school bus driver test, demonstrating how proper understanding can transform lives that educational systems initially failed to nurture.

🏘️ Cleveland seniors get new affordable housing option across from historic bakery. Wade Park Station, a $13.25 million development planned for Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood, will offer 40 apartments for residents aged 55+ earning 30-80% of the area's median income. Developer Wallick is seeking nearly $10 million in tax credits to build the three-story complex featuring community spaces and modern amenities. The project represents new investment in an area that has struggled since Hough Bakery's 1992 closure, despite being just one mile from University Circle's growing job center.

πŸ“š Learning disabilities couldn't hold back this determined woman. Sumica Williams faced classroom struggles in the 1960s before disabilities were recognized, often being moved between grades or left to color instead of learning. At age 9, she was institutionalized when she stopped talking, receiving medication rather than therapy. Despite these challenges, Williams later found success as a school bus driver, passing her test with a 98% thanks to a patient trainer who recognized and accommodated her learning needs. Her story highlights how proper support can transform lives, even after educational systems initially fail.

πŸ“š Lakeland Community College slashes 24 faculty positions amid budget crisis. The Ohio school is cutting 10 faculty through layoffs while 14 others will voluntarily retire this calendar year. These staffing reductions are part of broader measures to address a looming $2.5 million deficit for fiscal year 2026. The college will also eliminate four academic programs as part of the cost-cutting initiative. These changes come amid challenging times for higher education institutions in Northeast Ohio, where other universities are also facing enrollment and financial pressures.
