Gallia County • June 10, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. The waterways of the Ohio River Valley are becoming a highway for progress as massive production equipment for the $4 billion Nucor Steel mill made its way upbound this week. Three barges, pushed by the Amherst Madison towboat Ohio, carried the Italian-made machinery that will soon transform Apple Grove's industrial landscape. This floating caravan of economic promise offers a tangible glimpse of the manufacturing renaissance taking shape just across the river, with operations set to begin before 2026 ends.
Meanwhile, travelers throughout the region will need to plot alternative routes as Lawrence County prepares for a wave of road closures. State Routes 243, 775, and 93 will all face disruptions for improvements ranging from culvert replacements to slide repairs. Over in Mason County, similar infrastructure challenges continue, though there's progress to celebrate—paving has begun on Whitten Ridge, and the county fairgrounds will soon sport a new $25,000 fence for its horse ring.

🚧 Multiple road closures hit Lawrence County next week. State Route 243 will shut down for culvert replacements between Leatherwood Road and Rankins Creek Road, with detours in place until June 17. A slide repair on State Route 775 will also close that road, requiring drivers to follow detours via State Routes 217, 218, and 790. Meanwhile, the State Route 93 intersection improvement project begins Tuesday with at least one lane maintained in each direction. The Chesapeake Bypass Phase 2 construction continues, with County Road 68 closed indefinitely.
🚢 Massive steel mill equipment floats through Tri-State region. The Amherst Madison towboat Ohio traveled upbound Tuesday with three barges carrying what appeared to be production equipment for the Nucor Steel West Virginia mill. The machinery, bearing the logo of Italian company Danieli, is destined for the $4 billion facility under construction in Apple Grove, Mason County. While Nucor officials did not respond to inquiries about the specific equipment, the massive mill is scheduled to be operational before the end of 2026.
🛣️ Mason County roads slated for improvements amid staffing challenges. The Mason County Commission approved several measures during its recent meeting, including a $25,000 appropriation for a new fence at the fairgrounds horse ring. Division of Highways representatives reported that several county roads are under review for resurfacing, with paving already begun on Whitten Ridge, though they continue to face staffing shortages and need more CDL-certified operators. County Clerk Diana Cromley was congratulated on completing her one-year term as president of the West Virginia Association of Counties. The commission also welcomed Thomas Smith, Senator Capito's new field representative for the region.
