Gallia County • June 6, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. They say wisdom comes with age, and at nearly 100 years old, Stanford Fulks has accumulated enough to fill volumes. The Gallipolis native and WWII Army sharpshooter who served across Europe before working 36 years at Republic Steel credits his longevity to something refreshingly simple: "Hard work." His remarkable century of experiences spans from the Great Depression to the battlefields of Europe, leaving an indelible legacy that his grandchildren proudly call heroic.
History has a way of coming full circle in our community. Just ask Arthur Miller, the 90-year-old who recently returned to participate in the Lafayette historical marker unveiling—85 years after attending the original 1940 ceremony as a child. Meanwhile, positive change flows through the region as LeSage Natural, a West Virginia water bottling company employing 40 workers with disabilities, prepares to expand its award-winning operation through new partnerships with state agencies beginning July 1.

After witnessing both the hardships of the Great Depression and the brutalities of war, Fulks returned home to work 36 years at Republic Steel. When asked about the secret to his long life, the humble hero who earned multiple medals including the Arrowhead Medal simply replied, "Hard work." Though he's outlived his wives and children, Fulks remains surrounded by grandchildren who call him their hero.
🏛️ 90-year-old returns for historic marker unveiling after 85 years. Arthur Miller, who participated in the 1940 unveiling of the original Lafayette historical marker in Gallipolis, recently moved back to Ohio after living in Washington State for many years. Miller attended the Lafayette Bicentennial Celebration on May 22, where a new marker was unveiled. His cousin Tom Halliday, who joined him at the 1940 ceremony, was a French 500 descendant but has since passed away. Miller's return creates a living connection between two historic celebrations spanning more than eight decades.
