Gallia County • May 26, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. The spirit of remembrance and celebration flows through our communities this week as Point Pleasant honors fallen heroes with its annual Memorial Day parade. From veterans marching down Main Street to the Women's Auxiliary distributing flags, the event embodied the true meaning of a holiday that became official more than 150 years ago but remains vitally relevant today.
History comes alive in neighboring Marietta, where the bicentennial of Marquis de Lafayette's visit brought cannon fire and colonial pageantry to the levee. Closer to home, the future looks bright for two local scholars—Reagan Skidmore and Reba Williams—who've each secured $1,000 scholarships from the Gallia Academy High School Alumni Association as they prepare for their collegiate journeys to Ohio State and Marshall this fall.

🇺🇸 Point Pleasant honors fallen heroes with patriotic Memorial Day parade. Community members gathered on Main Street Saturday for the annual AMVETS-organized procession featuring veterans, first responders, and local organizations. The Women's Auxiliary Post 23 distributed flags and remembrance flowers while collecting donations to support veteran programs. Participants emphasized the importance of honoring those who sacrificed for America, with organizer Dennis Rayburn stressing how vital it is to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. The observance, officially recognized in 1868, became a national holiday in 1971 to be celebrated on the last Monday of May.
🇫🇷 Marietta celebrates 200 years since Lafayette's historic visit. The Ohio town welcomed a reenactor portraying the American Revolution general who arrived by boat at the Marietta Levee. The celebration included cannon fire, speeches, poetry, and music from Veritas Classical Academy students. Officials highlighted Lafayette's contributions to American independence and his advocacy for human rights, including his stance as an abolitionist and feminist. The event, two years in planning, commemorated Lafayette's 1825 farewell tour of America.
