Good morning, Gallia County. Across the Ohio River from Buffalo's $250,000 water system upgrade, Gallipolis residents are looking to the future. At the recent commission meeting, citizens advocated for everything from speed tables on First Avenue to a revitalized planning commission in preparation for anticipated economic developments. Meanwhile, commissioners approved several measures, including placing a half-percent income levy on November's ballot to fund essential services.

The spirit of Franco-American friendship is alive and well as Gallipolis celebrates the bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette's 1824 visit. Historian Noel Poirier kicked off the week-long commemoration with a presentation about the French military strategist who helped secure American independence. Lafayette specifically chose our community during his tour, and two centuries later, local businesses and organizations are honoring his legacy with diverse festivities throughout the area.

Troy Miller requested speed tables on First Avenue and suggested park closures to improve traffic flow. Another resident urged activation of a more robust city planning commission to prepare for anticipated economic developments across the Ohio River. Commissioners approved several resolutions, including one to place a half-percent income levy on the November ballot for street maintenance, police services, and cemetery operations. The commission also highlighted ongoing projects including a $9 million water main replacement and the Riverfront Improvement Project.
