Gallia County • March 21, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. A cornerstone of small-town life has passed with the death of Danny Sayre at 80. The longtime Wilkesville grocer who greeted generations of customers from behind the counter at Sayre's Grocery leaves behind not just a family legacy of four daughters and multiple grandchildren, but also the kind of community presence that defined rural Ohio commerce for decades—where shopping meant conversation, connection, and sometimes even coon hunting stories.
Meanwhile, the seeds of tomorrow are being planted quite literally as Mason County Career Center receives a $20,000 greenhouse grant from the Robert & Louise Claflin Foundation. The 24x36-foot commercial facility will soon have students growing herbs for school kitchens, providing hands-on agricultural education. This green initiative blooms alongside the Mason County Family Resource Network's efforts, where multiple organizations are collaborating to address everything from addiction resources to support for the county's homeless families.

🌱 Mason County students get growing with $20,000 greenhouse grant. The Robert & Louise Claflin Foundation presented the check to the Mason County Career Center on Tuesday, supporting a project that will serve all schools in the county. Combined with a previous $30,000 farm-to-table grant, the funds will construct a 24x36-foot commercial-quality greenhouse where students will grow herbs for school kitchens. FFA advisors Amy Miller and Sam Nibert expressed excitement about providing hands-on agricultural experiences for students. The facility is expected to be fully functional by fall, creating educational opportunities that will benefit both students and the wider community.
