🍎 Honeycrisp conquers

Good morning, Franklin County. Move over Red Delicious—there's a new apple aristocracy in town. Columbus residents have officially crowned Honeycrisp the ultimate apple in a landslide victory, with the crisp, juicy variety and its descendants claiming over half the votes on National Apple Day. Despite their challenging cultivation requirements, these thin-skinned favorites have seen production increase fivefold nationally since 2011, with Central Ohio's own Mitch Lynd helping develop the hardier EverCrisp offspring.

Art is bringing cultures together at Dublin's Bridge Park, where Chilean master Alejandro González and local artist Adam Hernandez guided community members in creating an eight-foot mural cube celebrating nature and heritage. Meanwhile, the Wexner Center is challenging historical narratives through filmmaker Fred Kudjo Kuwornu's documentary "We Were Here," which reveals the overlooked presence of Black ambassadors, diplomats and merchants in Renaissance Europe—a perspective that expands our understanding of history beyond familiar narratives.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🍎 Columbus crowns Honeycrisp the ultimate apple in landslide victory. According to a recent poll, Honeycrisp and its descendants claimed over half the votes from local readers on National Apple Day. The sweet-and-tangy variety has become America's gold standard, with production increasing roughly fivefold nationally since 2011. Despite their popularity, Honeycrisp apples are difficult to grow due to their thin skin, leading to hardier offshoots like EverCrisp, which was developed in Central Ohio through a breeding program co-founded by Mitch Lynd in 1998.

🎨 Dublin's new mural brings community and international art together. Columbus residents joined Chilean artist Alejandro "Mono" González and local artist Adam Hernandez to create an eight-by-eight-foot mural cube at Bridge Park. The collaborative artwork features themes of nature and ecology, with Hernandez incorporating elements honoring his Puerto Rican heritage alongside González's rainbow, sun, and tree imagery. González, recipient of Chile's 2025 National Prize for Visual Arts, emphasizes community engagement as a significant part of his urban art practice. The five-day project provided many participants their first experience painting a mural while celebrating cultural connections.

🎬 Italian filmmaker reveals hidden Black European Renaissance history. Fred Kudjo Kuwornu's documentary "We Were Here" challenges the notion of an all-white Europe through interviews with historians and art experts. Screening at the Wexner Center for the Arts, the film showcases how Africans appeared in Renaissance portraits not just as slaves, but as ambassadors, diplomats, and merchants. Born to an Italian mother and Ghanaian father, Kuwornu brings personal perspective to this untold history. The documentary aims to spark conversations about Europe's diverse historical makeup beyond the typical American understanding of Black history.
