🍩 Donuts meet skyline

Franklin County • March 5, 2025

Good morning, Franklin County. Columbus lost a piece of skyline history when the cylindrical Christopher Inn met the wrecking ball after just 25 years—turning mid-century modern luxury into a parking lot. It's a stark reminder that architectural treasures can vanish in the blink of an eye, though whispers of rebuilding this "Space Needle"-like landmark offer a glimmer of hope for the city's iconic skyline.

On a sweeter note, the culinary map of Columbus continues expanding as Mochinut brings its fusion of Hawaiian mochi donuts, Korean hot dogs, and Taiwanese boba to West 5th Avenue. The Pacific Rim treats arrive just as law enforcement closes a chapter on a different part of town, with two kingpins receiving lengthy sentences for operations that plagued the Hilltop neighborhood. From architectural losses to culinary gains, the landscape of Franklin County keeps evolving.

🏨 Columbus lost an architectural gem when the Christopher Inn was demolished. The unique cylindrical hotel opened in 1963, featuring 16 floors, 137 pie-slice rooms with panoramic views, and mid-century modern luxury. After just 20 years, the hotel faced financial troubles and was sold in 1988, only to be demolished and turned into a parking lot two months later. In 2020, the original architect expressed hopes to rebuild the iconic structure with modern technology, potentially giving Columbus its own "Space Needle"-like landmark. Sadly, what could have been a lasting architectural icon survived only 25 years.

🍩 Mochinut brings Pacific Rim treats to Columbus this month. The California-founded chain combines Hawaii-born mochi doughnuts, Korean-style hot dogs, and Taiwanese boba tea at its new West 5th Avenue location near Grandview Heights. Franchisees Ben and Bora Park relocated from Massachusetts to open the 1,500-square-foot shop, attracted by Columbus's growing market of young professionals and families. Each handmade item takes time to prepare—the rice flour doughnuts offer a crispy-yet-chewy texture with flavors ranging from ube to cookies and creme, while hot dogs come with creative toppings like Takis or Hot Cheetos. The Parks plan a gradual rollout, starting with limited hours and eight doughnut flavors.

🚓 Two drug kingpins sentenced for operating near elementary school. Dustin Speakman (35) and Tyler Bourdo (31) received 23 and 25 years respectively for their roles in a massive Columbus drug ring that operated from 2008 to 2022. The men were part of a 23-defendant case involving $1.5 million in cash, 44 firearms, and multiple properties in the Hilltop neighborhood. Bourdo was additionally convicted of sex trafficking and distributing drugs that resulted in death, while Speakman admitted to beating a drug runner who later died from overdosing. Federal authorities have been systematically prosecuting members of this extensive criminal network that operated dangerously close to children.
