🎓 College heat wave

Franklin County • January 22, 2025

Good morning, Franklin County. The polar vortex gripping Central Ohio might have our thermometers stuck in the teens, but that's not stopping our academic powerhouses from bringing the heat. Ohio State just dominated U.S. News' online education rankings, claiming top spots in four major categories and proving that excellence knows no temperature limits.

Meanwhile, a political deep freeze has hit Ohio's Senate representation, with our unprecedented situation of two freshman senators raising eyebrows in Washington. As JD Vance and newly-appointed Jon Husted settle into their roles, they're facing the uphill battle of building influence without the benefit of seniority. At least we can take comfort knowing that while our political clout might need time to warm up, our educational institutions are already hot stuff.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🏛️ Ohio's Senate clout takes hit with two freshman legislators. The state's unprecedented situation of having two first-term senators - JD Vance and Jon Husted - could weaken its influence in Congress. Governor Mike DeWine recently appointed his lieutenant governor, Husted, to fill the Senate seat, choosing him over other candidates including presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy. This development comes as Ohio faces crucial legislative challenges requiring experienced leadership. The seniority deficit could impact Ohio's ability to secure committee chairmanships and shape important legislation.

❄️ Bitter cold forces massive school closures across Central Ohio Wednesday. Dozens of districts from Columbus to Zanesville have canceled classes as temperatures remain stuck in the teens, extending what's already been a long weekend following MLK Day. Storm Team 4 forecasts relief is coming, with temperatures expected to climb into the upper 20s after Wednesday. Columbus City Schools, the region's largest district, was already scheduled to be closed for a staff records day. A welcome thaw could arrive by Saturday, bringing an end to this arctic blast.
