🏭 A billion-dollar boost

Franklin County • January 21, 2025

Good morning, Franklin County. When it comes to transformative announcements, they don't get much bigger than this: A staggering $1 billion defense technology factory is headed our way, promising 4,000 new jobs and cementing Central Ohio's position as a manufacturing powerhouse. Arsenal-1 isn't just another facility – it's poised to become the largest job creator in state history.

Meanwhile, our community is processing both endings and legacies. We're saying goodbye to Hal Block, the visionary who introduced authentic New York bagels to Columbus back in 1967, and bidding farewell to Wizard of Za, whose meteoric rise and viral pizza success became the stuff of local legend. As one chapter closes, another compelling story of Central Ohio innovation begins.

🥯 Columbus loses beloved bagel shop pioneer at age 91. Harold "Hal" Block, who brought authentic New York-style bagels to Columbus in 1967, passed away last week after dedicating nearly six decades to his craft. Block's Bagels grew from a small shop into a Columbus institution, using traditional recipes from his uncle's NYC bakery. His commitment to quality was legendary, as he continued working seven days a week even into his nineties. Though some locations have closed, his legacy lives on at the McNaughten Road store, which temporarily shut down to honor his passing.

🍕 Popular Columbus pizzeria closes after wild ride of viral success. Wizard of Za, which once had months-long waitlists for its pies, announced its final day of service at its Clintonville location inside Fusian. The concept's journey began as Spencer Saylor's passion project before being sold to Paceline Restaurants in 2022, when Saylor claims the recipes and brand essence changed significantly. After the sale, the business shifted focus from exclusive pre-ordered pies to more accessible options like pizza by the slice and sandwiches.
