🍺 Cheers to CBC

Franklin County • December 24, 2024

Good morning, Franklin County. Toast your mugs to a milestone moment: Columbus Brewing Company, our city's oldest craft brewery, just earned a spot among America's top 30 breweries nationwide. Not bad for a hometown hero that's been quietly perfecting its IPAs since 1988. While the rest of the country is just catching on to what we've known for decades, CBC keeps its liquid gold close to home, selling exclusively within state lines.

Speaking of hometown pride, Columbus is doubling down on its green initiatives, with seven new compost drop-off sites sprouting up across the city. We've already diverted 130,000 pounds of food waste from landfills – that's like keeping 65 adult elephants worth of scraps out of our dumps. Meanwhile, down at the Statehouse, lawmakers wrapped up their year with some interesting non-decisions, including a pause on those hemp product regulations.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🍺 Columbus' oldest craft brewery just landed among America's top 30. Columbus Brewing Company, brewing since 1988, earned a coveted spot on VinePair's prestigious list of "The 30 Best Breweries in the Country Right Now." The publication particularly praised CBC's IPA offerings, calling them some of the best yet least known outside Ohio, with special mention of their tropical Bodhi double IPA. Despite limiting sales to within state borders, CBC's spacious beer hall has become a destination for hop enthusiasts, showcasing rare and experimental brews. The brewery's commitment to quality and innovation is matched by its accessibility, offering premium IPAs at reasonable prices like $20 for a 15-pack.

♻️ Columbus doubles down on food waste with seven new compost sites. The city's successful pilot program has expanded from three to seven drop-off locations, making it easier for residents across different neighborhoods to participate in food scrap collection. Since launching, the initiative has already diverted an impressive 130,000 pounds of food waste from landfills, supporting Columbus's ambitious goal to reduce organic waste by 90% by 2050. The program accepts a wide variety of items including fruits, vegetables, grains, and even small amounts of meat and dairy products. While curbside pickup isn't yet available due to infrastructure limitations, the city's sustainability manager Aryeh Alex emphasizes that even small steps toward composting can make a significant environmental impact by reducing methane emissions.

⚖️ Ohio lawmakers leave key bills on cutting room floor. In a flurry of year-end legislative activity, several high-profile proposals failed to make it through the Ohio Statehouse. Among the casualties was a bill aimed at banning unregulated hemp products, which had drawn particular concern from the governor due to intoxicating substances in candies and gummies. Legislators also abandoned a proposal to significantly increase their annual pay raises from 1.75% to 5%. The failed initiatives highlight the often-chaotic nature of end-of-session lawmaking in Columbus.
