Good morning, Fayette County. Washington Court House is transforming before our eyes, with progress visible at every turn. From the newly opened splash pad (despite unfortunate vandalism issues) to the early arrival of a shiny 2025 Spartan fire engine, city improvements are rolling out faster than summer thunderstorms. The return of Safety Town after many years brings a welcome nostalgic touch, while new security cameras and bus shelters signal a community investing in both safety and convenience.

Downtown's renaissance continues with impressive momentum as Level Up Arcade, Vinyl Coffee, and multiple residential apartments take shape amid the historic buildings. With downtown living in high demand and approximately 8-10 units in development, our city center is evolving into a vibrant live-work hub. Meanwhile, the housing landscape shifts elsewhere too, as the county housing authority navigates changing property owner participation and rising costs in its mission to provide affordable homes for residents.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Fayette housing authority grapples with changing rental landscape. The board reported 410 Section 8 renters with an 86% occupancy rate, noting some property owners are withdrawing from HUD programs as housing becomes scarcer. Rising rent and utility costs may be affected by the upcoming Fair Market Housing rental update in October. Board members reviewed bylaws for the first time since 2016 and approved hiring two new office staff members, while construction on a new four-bedroom housing unit will begin in July alongside bathroom renovations at another property.
