Fayette County • March 26, 2025
Good morning, Fayette County. Reading is indeed "the key to life," as Governor DeWine recently emphasized, and our local schools are proving they hold the master key. Cherry Hill Primary and Belle Aire Intermediate have claimed an extraordinary honor, ranking among the top 1% of Ohio's 3,000+ schools for their reading programs. This elite recognition places our young readers among the brightest stars in the state's educational galaxy.
Meanwhile, our county's landscape is transforming in more ways than one. Altafiber's ambitious fiber optic network will soon connect thousands of homes and businesses, while a proposed natural gas facility north of I-71 could reshape our energy future. These developments arrive as the county prepares for LG Battery's 2,400 new employees, with childcare expansion on the horizon. In less uplifting news, a Chillicothe man's vehicle theft case reminds us that justice continues to roll through our court system.

π Ohio schools earn elite literacy recognition from Governor DeWine. Washington CH's Cherry Hill Primary and Belle Aire Intermediate were among just 47 schools statewide honored for exceptional reading achievement. The two schools rank in the top one percent of Ohio's 3,000+ schools implementing science-based reading practices. "Reading is the key to learning. Reading is the key to life," emphasized Governor DeWine during his 2025 State of the State Address. Superintendent Dr. Tom Bailey praised the recognition as a testament to the dedication of teachers, staff, students, and families in the district.
π Chillicothe man gets prison time for stolen vehicle case. Joseph Bender, 42, was sentenced to six months behind bars after pleading guilty to receiving stolen property in Highland County. The court ordered him to pay $1,000 in restitution to the victim whose vehicle he unlawfully possessed. Judge Rocky Coss also imposed an additional 997-day sentence because Bender committed this offense while on post-release control for a previous felony. He's currently incarcerated at North Central Correctional Institution serving his combined sentences.
π Fayette County's tech and energy landscape is rapidly evolving. Altafiber plans to build a fiber optic network in Washington Court House and Jeffersonville, starting with 4,900 homes and businesses with construction beginning in late 2025. Meanwhile, Bluegrass Power Generation has proposed a 400MW natural gas-fired electric facility north of I-71, with a public forum scheduled for April 10. The county is also addressing growing childcare needs as LG Battery prepares for 2,400 employees, with the YMCA considering expansion of its services to accommodate the influx of families.
