🩺 Doula drama

Fayette County • March 12, 2025

Good morning, Fayette County. Birth workers across Ohio are facing a surprising leadership shift as the state's doula advisory group loses its ability to elect its own chair. Instead of experienced doula Marie McClausland, the group will now be led by Joe Quackenbush—the sole male member with no doula background—raising concerns about representation in this crucial maternal health initiative. Meanwhile, unpaid Medicaid claims since October have left many of these essential workers in financial limbo.

On a brighter note, education meets real-world experience as Hillsboro High School senior Corbin Winkle gains valuable skills through his placement at Sullivan Supply, repairing equipment and managing inventory at the livestock supply company. And our community bids farewell to a long life well-lived, as Helen Brewsaugh has passed away at 95, leaving behind a legacy spanning four generations of family after nearly a century of Highland County history.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

👶 Ohio doulas clash with state officials over voice and power. The advisory group, which helps certify doulas for Medicaid reimbursement, has lost its ability to elect its own chair. Instead of Marie McClausland, Joe Quackenbush—the only man in the group with no doula experience—will now lead meetings. Doulas report multiple unresolved issues, including unpaid Medicaid claims since October and concerns that the clinical Ohio Board of Nursing isn't appropriate for overseeing non-clinical doula work. Despite some successes in improving the certification process, members feel their expertise is being dismissed in the state's maternal health initiative.
