Fairfield County • August 28, 2025
Good morning, Fairfield County. Fewer than 30 people have completed what's hiding in plain sight across our state—the 1,444-mile Buckeye Trail, America's longest loop trail within a single state. This hidden gem could soon join the ranks of the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails with prestigious National Scenic Trail designation, potentially transforming Ohio's outdoor reputation and bringing more adventurers to our diverse landscapes. Current record holder Ian Koenig conquered the entire loop in just 35 days, averaging a mind-boggling 41 miles daily.
Beyond our trails, the community calendar is filling with noteworthy events and faces. The West Central Ohio Safety Council will host a trauma-focused meeting in Lima next month, while Ohio University Lancaster welcomes nursing professor Tiffany Ealy, who brings over a decade of healthcare experience to campus as she simultaneously pursues her doctorate. Her appointment continues the tradition of healthcare professionals strengthening our local educational institutions.

🥾 Ohio's hidden gem: a 1,444-mile trail circling the entire state. The Buckeye Trail, America's longest loop trail within a single state, is being considered for prestigious National Scenic Trail status. This designation would place it alongside iconic routes like the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails, potentially attracting more thru-hikers and resources. The trail showcases Ohio's diverse landscapes—from urban centers to remote wilderness—and has been completed end-to-end by fewer than 30 people, with record-holder Ian Koenig finishing in just 35 days. Maintained largely by volunteers since its 1959 inception, the trail connects 49 counties and offers both challenging adventures and accessible day hikes for Ohioans.
