Good morning, Fairfield County. In a heartbreaking reminder of parental love's ultimate sacrifice, 29-year-old speech therapist Alexa Stakely lost her life protecting her sleeping 6-year-old son during a carjacking attempt. As one perpetrator now faces up to 16½ years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, the community continues to process this devastating July tragedy that underscores the unfathomable courage of a mother's instinct.

The skies opened up across central Ohio Monday, drenching areas south of I-70 with nearly two inches of rainfall in some locations and triggering Flash Flood Warnings in Athens County. As more storms loom in the forecast, families are simultaneously preparing for another inevitable reality: the imminent return to school. With districts like Groveport Madison welcoming students back as early as August 11, summer's fleeting days are quickly slipping away for central Ohio's youngsters.
