Good morning, Fairfield County. The thermometer doesn't lie—a dangerous heat wave has arrived, sending temperatures soaring into the 90s across Ohio. While summer often brings warm days, this stretch is particularly concerning for vulnerable residents without air conditioning. Fortunately, several local cooling stations are stepping up, including The Foundation Dinners and Fairfield Center of Hope, offering not just relief from the sweltering temperatures but also meals and additional services during these challenging days.

Meanwhile, local institutions are experiencing significant changes on multiple fronts. Ohio universities are adjusting to new higher education legislation after a referendum effort fell short, while the Viking Baseball Diamond Club hit a home run for Teays Valley schools with a generous $25,000 donation earmarked for facility improvements. This financial boost comes as Superintendent Kyle Wolfe voices "deep concern" about proposed housing developments potentially worsening school overcrowding—highlighting the delicate balance between growth and infrastructure needs.

Fairfield County offers several cooling stations including The Foundation Dinners, Fairfield Center of Hope, Maple Street United Methodist Church, and Connexion West. These locations provide not only relief from the heat but also meals and other services during specific hours. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these cooling centers to stay safe during the extreme temperatures.

📚 Ohio professors fail to block controversial higher education law. Opponents of Senate Bill 1 collected nearly 195,000 signatures but fell short of the 248,092 needed to force a November referendum. The volunteer-run effort reached the signature threshold in only 33 of the required 44 counties despite campaigning statewide. The law, effective June 27, bans diversity programs on campus, prohibits faculty strikes, eliminates controversial majors, and prevents universities from taking positions on "controversial issues." Universities are already dismantling equity offices and LGBTQ centers as opponents pivot to potential legal challenges.
