🚒 Tanker trouble

Fairfield County • June 25, 2025

Good morning, Fairfield County. The dramatic scene unfolding on I-270 yesterday looked like something from an action movie as a tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline erupted into flames, sending plumes of smoke visible for miles. While the intense fire damaged pavement and marked the bridge, ODOT inspectors have thankfully confirmed no structural damage to the highway infrastructure, and the Ohio EPA reports no environmental impacts from the incident.

Transportation challenges continue elsewhere in our community, with four rail cars derailing near Sugar Grove Park Monday afternoon, spilling rock and gravel but thankfully no hazardous materials. Meanwhile, as summer temperatures climb, our region faces another pressing concern: PJM Interconnection warns that central Ohio's power grid could experience strain in coming years as massive developments from tech giants consume more electricity during extreme heat. Officials assure us we're relatively well-positioned for this summer, but the situation bears watching.

🔥 Massive tanker explosion shuts down major Ohio highway. The Ohio EPA reported no environmental impacts after a tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline crashed and caught fire on I-270 near SR-161. Most fuel burned in the blaze, with a private contractor hired to handle remaining cleanup. The intense fire damaged pavement on SR-161 and marked the bridge, though ODOT inspections found no structural damage to bridge beams. Nearby resident Diana Westhoff described the terrifying scene, noting the smoke was visible from miles away.

⚡ Ohio power grid faces critical summer strain amid surging demand. PJM Interconnection warns central Ohio may experience energy shortfalls as massive developments like Intel and Google facilities consume more electricity during extreme heat. Aging power plants are retiring faster than new energy sources can come online, potentially pushing the system to its limits during peak demand. A new natural gas plant in New Albany should help, but it won't be operational in time to address the projected shortfall two years from now. Despite concerns, PJM officials say Ohio is relatively well-positioned for this summer while they continue monitoring the situation.
