🍖 Brewery barbecue blend

Fairfield County • March 14, 2025

Good morning, Fairfield County. The aroma of hardwood-smoked barbecue is permanently wafting through the rustic grounds of Rockmill Brewery as Backcountry BBQ transitions from food truck to fixture. This Lithopolis favorite has found its forever home at the Lancaster brewery, which recently changed hands when Austin Caulk and Taylor Scribner purchased the sprawling property this spring, continuing the evolution of a local landmark that's been serving craft brews since 2010.

Meanwhile, tensions are rising along with potential apartment buildings as Canal Winchester residents push back against a proposed 122-unit development on Hill Road, citing traffic concerns and density issues. The debate coincides with statewide education funding anxiety as Central Ohio school districts rally against Governor DeWine's proposed $100 million in adjustments – with Columbus City Schools alone facing over $52 million in potential reductions that officials warn could impact classroom resources.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🍖 Backcountry BBQ finds permanent home at Rockmill Brewery. The popular food truck from Lithopolis is establishing an ongoing outpost at the Lancaster brewery, offering their full menu of hardwood smoked traditional barbecue. Rockmill, which spans multiple acres featuring a rustic taproom and farm atmosphere, recently changed ownership when Austin Caulk and Taylor Scribner purchased the property in spring 2024. The BBQ spot will operate Thursday through Sunday with varying hours, complementing the brewery's beer offerings. Originally founded by former Columbus restaurateur Matthew Barbee in 2010, Rockmill continues to evolve under its new ownership.

🏢 Canal Winchester debates 122-apartment development on Hill Road. Stark Enterprises presented plans for a mix of ranch and townhouse-style units on a 25.8-acre site, featuring amenities like a clubhouse, sports courts, and walking paths. Local residents expressed concerns about density and traffic impact, with one claiming Hill Road is "already jam packed." School officials questioned the developer's estimate of only 16 new students, noting three-bedroom units could attract more families. If approved, construction could begin in spring 2026 after receiving recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission.

📚 Ohio educators protest $100 million in proposed education cuts. Central Ohio school districts gathered Wednesday to oppose Governor DeWine's budget, which they claim will significantly impact student resources. Representatives from Columbus, Hilliard, and South-Western City Schools called on State Rep. Brian Stewart to prevent these cuts from passing. Columbus City Schools alone faces over $52 million in reductions, while DeWine's office argues these aren't cuts but adjustments based on the Fair School Funding Plan. Many districts warn they'll need to use levy funding to compensate for the shortfall if the budget passes as proposed.
