๐Ÿ“ True crime suburbia

Fairfield County • February 13, 2025

โ€‹

Good morning, Fairfield County. Just when you thought Pickerington was your typical quiet Midwest suburb, it turns into the finale of a true-crime series. U.S. Marshals just nabbed Ecuador's most wanted murderer hiding in plain sight among our grocery stores and soccer fields, proving once again that reality can be stranger than Netflix's latest offerings.

On a less dramatic note, Canal Winchester residents might need to press pause on those apartment-hunting plans. A proposed 122-unit complex along Hill Road is facing more scrutiny than a teenager's Instagram feed, with city planners concerned about everything from zoning to pickleball courts. Meanwhile, the county courthouse has been busier than a coffee shop on Monday morning, processing enough cases to fill a season of Law & Order.

๐Ÿšจ Ecuador's most wanted murderer nabbed in quiet Ohio suburb. U.S. Marshals arrested Luis Naula-Candelario, 29, in Pickerington after tracking him down through a joint investigation with ICE officers. The fugitive was wanted for the 2019 killing of Brenda Alexandra Garcia Puya in Ecuador. Following a brief standoff, authorities safely apprehended Naula-Candelario, who now awaits extradition back to Ecuador in ICE custody.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Canal Winchester hits pause on 122-unit apartment complex plan. The Planning and Zoning Commission tabled requests to rezone 26.7 acres along Hill Road for a new residential development. City staff cited concerns about the project's compatibility with the 2023 Community Plan and its relationship to the pedestrian network. The proposed complex would feature one and three-bedroom units, each with two-car garages, plus amenities like a clubhouse, playground, and pickleball court. Public hearings on the project are expected in the coming months, with notices to be sent to neighboring property owners.
