🌌 Stars and stories

Fairfield County • December 31, 2024

Good morning, Fairfield County. History is taking a bold step forward at Alum Creek Park, where Ohio's first Underground Railroad heritage trail now winds through the wilderness, telling stories of courage that were once whispered in shadows. This three-quarter-mile journey through time reveals how freedom seekers used the very stars above us to navigate their path to liberty - the same stars we can still see twinkling over Fairfield County tonight.

While we reflect on these powerful connections to our past, the landscape around us continues to evolve. Twenty years after the Route 33 bypass carved its path through our cherished farmland, nature is slowly reclaiming its territory. Those stark cuts through the countryside that once seemed so jarring have softened, reminding us that even the most dramatic changes eventually become part of our community's story.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

⚡ Ohio unveils first Underground Railroad heritage trail at Alum Creek Park. The new Heritage of Freedom Trail, spanning just under three-quarters of a mile, offers visitors an immersive journey through a crucial chapter of American history. Interactive signage along the natural surface loop teaches visitors about the historic free Black community of Africa, Ohio, and shows how freedom seekers used nature to navigate their path to liberty. The trail, launched by ODNR with support from local leaders, highlights how escaped enslaved people used stars for navigation and foraged for survival. Three additional Heritage of Freedom Trails are planned across Ohio state parks, with historians and community members collaborating to ensure authentic storytelling.

😢 Prison officer murdered on Christmas Day while working voluntary overtime shift. Andrew Lansing, a corrections officer at Ross Correctional Institution in Ohio, was brutally attacked in his guard shack by inmate Rashawn Cannon, who had previously received disciplinary action from Lansing. The assault, which occurred as inmates were heading to the dining hall, involved no weapons but was described as "brutal" by Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Director Annette Chambers-Smith, who called the perpetrator "pure evil." The tragedy has sparked demands from the prison officers' union for leadership changes and improved safety measures, though officials maintain the facility was properly staffed that day. Lansing, who left behind a family, had volunteered to work the Christmas shift when the unthinkable happened.

🛣️ Lancaster's scenic farmland forever changed by massive bypass 20 years ago. The $158 million, 12-mile Route 33 bypass project dramatically altered the landscape of Fairfield County, Ohio, when it opened in 2004. Local families like the Snokes were forced to abandon their generational homes and log cabins as the highway cut through their properties. The bypass, which required significant geological alterations including massive land cuts, has now become a familiar sight for drivers, with Trinity Lutheran Church serving as a notable landmark along the route. Two decades later, nature has begun to reclaim parts of the construction zone, with vegetation now obscuring what were once stark cuts through the countryside.
