Good morning, Dublin. The arts scene is getting a $24 million boost in Columbus, with ticket and hotel taxes funding everything from the Columbus Museum of Art to BalletMet's new dance floor. Beyond the financial support, the cityscape itself is becoming a canvas, with 21 new murals set to join the 80 already brightening our streets since 2022. The creative spirit extends beyond visual arts, with global musicians Malka Spigel and Colin Newman bringing their boundary-pushing Nanocluster project to town.
Meanwhile, the much-touted "exclusive" scooter partnership between Columbus and Veo isn't quite as exclusive as advertised. Despite the continuing presence of competitor Spin and delays in the promised docking infrastructure, micromobility remains crucial for our city's transportation ecosystem. Nearly a million local trips were taken on scooters and bikes last year, and Veo plans to triple its current fleet in the coming monthsβproving that sometimes the path to progress has a few unexpected detours.

π Columbus ticket taxes funnel $24 million to local arts groups. The 5% ticket tax and 5.1% hotel tax support 108 organizations including the Columbus Museum of Art and BalletMet. Funds help maintain facilities, with BalletMet using money to replace a dance floor in 2023. The Greater Columbus Arts Council also distributes grants of up to $10,000 for artists and $25,000 for filmmakers. Additionally, 21 new public murals will join the 80 completed since the program launched in 2022.
π΅ Global grassroots music thrives through collaborative experimentation in Columbus. Musicians Malka Spigel and Colin Newman brought their Nanocluster project to Columbus, showcasing their innovative approach to music creation in the digital age. Through their collaborative performances and weekly radio show "Swimming in Sound," the duo connects with artists worldwide to push creative boundaries beyond algorithms and nostalgia. Their partnership with ambient country band SUSS resulted in Nanocluster Vol. 3, enabling them to tour America while promoting grassroots music discovery. By embracing collaboration and experimentation, Spigel and Newman offer a refreshing solution to finding exciting new music in today's overwhelming landscape.
π΄ Columbus' new scooter deal isn't as exclusive as promised. The city's agreement with Veo was initially pitched as an exclusive partnership to improve micromobility options and reduce sidewalk clutter, but Spin continues to operate after settling a lawsuit. Veo's much-touted "hybrid parking system" with docks and designated zones is now on a "wait and see" approach, with most physical infrastructure delayed. Despite the setbacks, micromobility remains important for Columbus, with nearly a million local trips taken on scooters and bikes last year. Veo plans to expand its current 500-device fleet by another 1,000 in the coming months.
