Dev Test County • March 7, 2025
Good morning, Dev Test County. A nostalgic revival is underway in Aurora as city officials breathe new life into Geauga Lake, purchasing the beloved former amusement park and 47 adjacent acres for transformation into public greenspace. The announcement came during the State of the City luncheon, where outgoing Superintendent Mike Roberto also highlighted the school district's remarkable achievement of earning five stars across all state report card components for the third consecutive year โ quite the capstone to his 25-year career.
Meanwhile, taste buds are tingling across the county with Wayback Burgers set to open in Stow's Fishcreek Plaza this summer, bringing their famous "Cheeeesy" four-slice burger to Summit County. And in Cleveland Heights, the CLE Urban Winery narrowly dodged disaster when a car crashed into their building โ yet another challenge for a Cedar Lee District already navigating recovery from January's apartment fire. Talk about needing a glass of wine after that close call!

๐๏ธ Aurora unveils grand plans for Geauga Lake park transformation. During the State of the City luncheon, Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin announced the city's purchase of Geauga Lake and 47 adjacent acres for park development. Outgoing Superintendent Mike Roberto, concluding his 25-year career, highlighted Aurora Schools' achievement of five stars in all five state report card components for the third consecutive year. Roberto warned about declining state funding for public schools, noting that Aurora now receives only 18.1% of its revenue from Ohio compared to 27.8% in 2011. The mayor also celebrated economic growth with new businesses opening and infrastructure improvements throughout the city.
๐ Wayback Burgers is bringing juicy delights to Stow this summer. The restaurant will open at Fishcreek Plaza on Kent Road, marking their second location in Summit County and sixth in Ohio. The 1,880 square-foot space will feature a modern kitchen visible to diners and create approximately 30 new jobs. Known for their signature "Cheeeesy" burger with four slices of American cheese between buttered buns, Wayback also serves cheesesteaks, chicken sandwiches, and milkshakes in their expanding chain that began in Delaware in 1991.
๐ฅ Cleveland Heights winery narrowly escapes disaster after car crashes into building. The CLE Urban Winery in the Cedar Lee District had its retaining wall destroyed when a driver mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake. Owner Destiny Burns called it "another challenge on the 2025 bingo card" for a neighborhood already struggling after a massive apartment fire in January closed Cedar Road. The road closure has caused traffic delays and decreased customer traffic to local businesses. Despite these setbacks, the district received some relief when the Cedar-Lee Parking Garage recently reopened after weeks of closure.
