Darke County • October 14, 2025
Good morning, Darke County. Mother Nature is making a triumphant comeback at Englewood MetroPark, where a once-dry 40-acre wetland flows freely again after an impressive restoration project. Using 40 tons of soil, clay, and rocks, conservation teams have repaired critical levee breaches, already attracting bird species that haven't visited in a decade. This environmental victory shows how thoughtful intervention can revitalize our natural landscapes—much like how technology is transforming our agricultural traditions.
Speaking of transformations, the future of farming is rolling through local fields as Barry Rodeheffer recently demonstrated a fully autonomous John Deere tractor that operates via smartphone. Meanwhile, history comes alive on October 24 when Revolutionary War soldiers' stories will be shared during a special twilight cemetery tour at Pleasant Hill. With costumed presenters and refreshments from the Daughters of the Revolution, this America250 event bridges our revolutionary past with our increasingly autonomous future.

💧 Englewood MetroPark's once-dry wetland flows again after major restoration. The 40-acre wetland, previously nicknamed "Englewood Lake," suffered from three erosion points in its levee that allowed water to escape rapidly. Five Rivers MetroParks staff used 40 tons of soil, clay, and rocks to repair the breaches, followed by planting native vegetation to reinforce the structure. The restoration has already attracted birds that hadn't been seen in the area for a decade, with 258 species reported since completion. Conservation staff now plan to use levy money to replace the berm for a more permanent solution to protect the wetland ecosystem and mitigate flooding along the Stillwater River.
🇺🇸 Revolutionary War soldiers come alive in twilight cemetery tour. Pleasant Hill Events committee is hosting a special America250 cemetery walk on Friday, October 24, from 6-7pm at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitors will hear fascinating stories about four Revolutionary soldiers buried there, presented by Sons of the Revolution members in period costume. The family-friendly event includes refreshments provided by local Daughters of the Revolution, with tours departing every 15 minutes. In case of bad weather, the event will move to Newton Fieldhouse.
🚜 Autonomous tractors are no longer science fiction in Darke County. Local farmer Barry Rodeheffer recently hosted a demonstration of a fully autonomous John Deere tractor, showing how the technology can operate without human intervention. The driverless machines use GPS, cameras, and sensors to perform farming tasks like spraying and tilling, with farmers controlling everything from a smartphone app. Existing tractors from 2020-25 can be upgraded with autonomy software for about $40,000, making the technology accessible to larger operations. Rodeheffer expects multiple driverless tractors will be operating in Darke County within the next two years.
