Good morning, Darke County. The walls of Piqua Public Library have transformed into a vibrant gallery showcase through October 30, featuring the impressive Mahrt Collection. Evelyn Mahrt, whose "moody" artwork once reached galleries nationwide, brings her artistic legacy home—a fitting tribute from the woman who helped birth the annual Taste of the Arts Festival. Her collection invites viewers to discover the subliminal messages hidden within each carefully crafted piece, offering a rare glimpse into one of our region's most accomplished artistic minds.
Meanwhile, the courtroom drama continues in the Piqua High School arson case, with Grady Egerton's competency again under scrutiny as three psychologists prepare to testify. And for those feeling inspired to make a difference locally, Councilman Greg White's recent address to the Business & Professional Women's Club serves as a timely reminder that meaningful community change begins with citizens willing to speak up and participate—perhaps at their "Fall Into a Night of Giving" event on October 9.

🎨 Local artist's collection transforms Piqua Public Library into gallery haven. The Mahrt Collection, featuring works by Evelyn Mahrt and numerous local artists, is currently on display at the Horace Rollin Gallery until October 30. Mahrt, who holds degrees from Edison State and Wright State, once operated her own fine art gallery in downtown Piqua representing 85 artists. Beyond her own artistic career that reached galleries across the country, she's recognized as one of the originators of the annual Piqua Taste of the Arts Festival. Mahrt describes her works as "moody and all about feelings," often containing subliminal messages viewers discover on their own.
🔥 High school arson suspect's mental competency again under scrutiny. Grady Egerton's lawyer has resubmitted a suggestion of incompetency in the Piqua High School arson case, arguing he cannot understand proceedings or assist in his defense. Three psychologists who evaluated Egerton will testify at an upcoming hearing, with the judge determining if he can stand trial. Egerton has also entered a not guilty by reason of insanity plea, which addresses his mental state at the time of the alleged crime. Surveillance video reportedly shows him throwing a propane tank at the school entrance and starting a fire that caused an explosion.
🗣️ Local councilman urges citizens to speak up for change. Greg White, Greenville City Council Member, addressed the Business & Professional Women's Club on September 11, encouraging members to attend council meetings and voice community needs. White, describing himself as a "change agent" and "fixer," emphasized that council needs to hear directly from citizens to implement meaningful improvements. The BPW Club, which works to achieve equity for women in the workplace, is preparing for their annual "Fall Into a Night of Giving" event on October 9 featuring vendors and a silent auction.
