🏫 Blueprint buzz

Clermont County • August 19, 2025

Good morning, Clermont County. Lakota School District is drawing up blueprints for the future, unveiling locations for four new elementary schools that would transform its educational landscape. The ambitious $506.4 million plan aims to address overcrowding while reducing the district's building count from 21 to 16—but first, it needs voter approval this November. The strategic site selections would allow construction without displacing students, maintaining the community's cherished "neighborhood schools" concept.

While educational infrastructure evolves on land, the region's waterfront is getting its own makeover. Dayton, Kentucky's expansion of the Riverwalk trail represents another piece in the impressive Ohio River connectivity puzzle, linking eight cities along the waterway. And in a bittersweet environmental note, those magical summer fireflies that once illuminated our evenings are flashing less frequently as their habitats disappear—a gentle reminder from nature that some of our most enchanting experiences depend on preserving the spaces we share.

🏫 Lakota unveils sites for four new elementary schools pending tax approval. The proposed locations include Shawnee Early Childhood School, Hopewell campus, Lakota West Freshman/Creekside area, and Lakota Central/Liberty Junior/Woodland campus. The construction is part of a comprehensive facilities plan that would reduce the district's buildings from 21 to 16, addressing overcrowding in the 17,000-student district. If voters approve the November ballot measure, the $506.4 million plan would raise property taxes starting in 2029 and qualify for approximately $200 million in state reimbursement. Officials selected sites that would allow construction without displacing students while maintaining balanced "neighborhood schools" across townships.

🪲 Fireflies flash less as habitats fade across the Tri-State area. Experts at Mount Saint Joseph University report these beloved insects are in decline due to environmental challenges. Adult fireflies appear only during May and June for about 60 days, spending most of their lifecycle as larvae on the ground. Dr. Gene Kritsky warns they're particularly vulnerable to habitat changes like tree removal and excessive lawn mowing. While not yet endangered, fireflies face increasing threats as climate changes and natural habitats disappear.
