Good morning, Athens County. A piece of living history stands proudly in our community as the Athena Cinema celebrates an astonishing 110 years of silver screen magic. From its humble beginnings as "The Majestic" charging just a dime for admission in 1915, to its current role as Athens' last remaining movie theater, this cultural landmark continues to bring us together through the power of shared stories – now with Ohio University students helping write its next chapter.

While our historic theater preserves the past, Athens is simultaneously nurturing its future through expanding pollinator gardens across the city. Despite last year's challenging drought conditions, residents are creating havens for bees and butterflies in both private yards and public spaces. And for knowledge-hungry Bobcats, there's exciting news as Ohio University partners with University Libraries to provide free New York Times digital access to all students, faculty and staff starting June 1 – complete with Wordle and crossword puzzles for your daily brain workout.

🎬 Historic Athens cinema marks 110 years of shared movie magic. The Athena Cinema, one of America's oldest theaters, celebrated its milestone anniversary with community members sharing personal memories and connections. Originally named "The Majestic," the theater opened in 1915 with Mary Pickford's "Cinderella" and a dime admission priceβ€”the same price they charged for a special anniversary screening of "Cinema Paradiso." Now operated by Ohio University's College of Fine Arts and staffed by students, the Athena remains Athens' last standing movie theater following the closure of the East State Street multiplex last year.

🐝 Athens blooms with pollinator gardens despite drought challenges. The city is encouraging residents to plant flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators in both private yards and public spaces. Mayor Steve Patterson expressed concern about how last year's drought affected milkweed growth, potentially reducing monarch butterfly populations. Meanwhile, Ohio University is working toward its fifth Bee Campus USA designation by maintaining pollinator gardens, reducing mowing in specific areas, and removing invasive species. Local businesses like Greenleaf Landscapes offer a variety of pollinator-friendly plants including passionvines, snapdragons, and native species for both sun and shade gardens.
