Athens County • May 26, 2025
Good morning, Athens County. The ripple effects of a grandmother's advice to "live authentically" have carried Paige Best from high school golf courses to Ohio University's prestigious Law, Justice and Culture Early Assurance Program. The Dawson-Bryant senior represents the next generation of legal advocates taking shape right here in our community, joining a tradition of local talent development that includes the Jefferson Alumni Association's impressive scholarship program, which just awarded $11,000 to eleven promising graduates pursuing everything from engineering to psychology.
Meanwhile, a quiet revolution in addiction recovery is unfolding across Southeast Ohio. The Hope Center's peer-to-peer support network is expanding beyond Nelsonville to Pomeroy, with Hocking and Vinton counties on the horizon. Led by Executive Director Chris MacNeal, himself 4.5 years into recovery, these community-based efforts are reimagining recovery through social connections and craft workshops—proving that sometimes the most powerful medicine is simply having someone who understands walk alongside you.

She credits her grandmother's advice to "live authentically" as particularly inspiring throughout her academic journey. Among her recent accomplishments, Best is proud of being accepted into Ohio University's Honors Program and the Law, Justice and Culture Early Assurance Program. Looking ahead, she aspires to become a successful human or civil rights lawyer with a strong client reputation within the next two decades.
