Good morning, Athens County. The pathway to higher education just got wider in our region. Ohio University and Southern State Community College have forged a promising partnership that creates seamless transitions for associate degree graduates into bachelor's programs. This collaboration opens doors in fields ranging from human services to nursing, accommodating both in-person and online learners from Hillsboro and Mount Orab—a perfect example of institutions working together to make education more accessible for everyone.

Meanwhile, OU continues making waves in sustainability and journalism excellence. The university is seeking a faculty leader for its new Sustainable Infrastructure Hub as part of broader campus initiatives, while journalism graduate Sophia Young recently claimed first place and $3,000 in the prestigious Hearst Journalism Awards Podcast Competition. Young's investigative piece on the troubled teen industry helped propel Ohio University to impressive national rankings in both photojournalism and broadcast categories.

🎓 Ohio University and SSCC create seamless pathway for transfer students. The new partnership allows Southern State Community College students who complete associate degrees to easily transition into bachelor's programs at Ohio University. Students can pursue degrees in fields like Human Services, Journalism, and an RN to BSN pathway in one of Ohio's top-ranked nursing programs. The carefully developed transfer system accommodates both in-person and online learning options, making higher education more accessible for students from Hillsboro and Mount Orab campuses. Both institutions expressed enthusiasm about strengthening educational opportunities and helping students achieve their academic and professional goals.

🌱 Ohio University seeks faculty leader for Sustainable Infrastructure Hub. The position will coordinate sustainability research, engagement, and curriculum efforts beginning in fall 2025. The coordinator will give presentations on sustainability themes and report progress to the University Sustainability Committee. Applications are due by June 12, with interested faculty encouraged to email sustainability@ohio.edu with questions. The Hub is part of OHIO's broader sustainability restructuring effort that created three interconnected "Sustainability Engagement Ecosystems" to advance campus initiatives.

🎙️ OHIO journalism alumna wins $3,000 in prestigious podcast competition. Sophia Young, a 2024 graduate, took first place in the inaugural Hearst Journalism Awards Podcast Competition with her investigative piece on the troubled teen industry. Young was one of six Ohio University students who placed in the top 20 across various categories, with Hailey Swaino earning third place in audio and several visual communication majors ranking in photojournalism. The strong showing helped Ohio University place fifth in the overall intercollegiate photojournalism competition and seventh in broadcast, boosting the school's national reputation for journalism excellence.

🙏 In Remembrance

Robert Joseph Shostak

Robert Joseph Shostak, 81, passed away on May 19, 2025, in Athens, Ohio, after a life that began in a German work camp during WWII before his family immigrated to the United States in 1949. An accomplished environmental lawyer, he argued before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, addressed the United Nations, and served as a professor at Ohio University while also working on the Athens City Council. Throughout his career, Robert was known for championing the underprivileged, sharing his legal expertise generously, and captivating others with his charismatic personality and storytelling abilities. He is survived by his life partner Charlotte Newman, three daughters, four grandchildren, and two siblings, with his family requesting donations to UNICEF or the Athens County Food Pantry in lieu of flowers.
