Excellence in journalism continues to flourish locally as WOUB students Ella Hughes and Parker Kopronica receive prestigious leadership awards recognizing their exceptional work in broadcast media. Both students credit their hands-on experience at the Ohio University media organization with building the confidence and professional skills that earned them these distinguished honors and financial support to further their journalistic journeys.
The theme of inspiring leadership extends throughout our community this week. Dr. John Schriner delivered a moving farewell address to medical graduates after guiding nearly 3,500 students through their educational journeys, while Glouster native Dr. Jennifer Gwilym earned remarkable national and state recognition for her service excellence in osteopathic medicine. These stories highlight Athens County's remarkable tradition of nurturing talent that makes meaningful contributions both locally and beyond.

🏆 Two WOUB students win leadership awards for journalism excellence. Ella Hughes received the Tom and Jan Hodson Leadership Award, while Parker Kopronica earned the Dr. Carolyn Bailey Lewis Leadership Award at the Ohio University media organization. Both awards provide financial support for students displaying exceptional leadership in journalism. Hughes, originally from Oregon, Ohio, works on several WOUB sports programs including Gridiron Glory, while Kopronica from Lorain will serve as supervising producer for Gridiron Glory for a second year. Both students credit WOUB with building their confidence and professional skills in broadcast journalism.
🎓 Retiring admissions dean gives heartfelt farewell to medical graduates. John Schriner, who has welcomed nearly 3,500 students to Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine over his 30-year career, delivered the keynote address at the Class of 2025's commencement ceremony. He urged the 237 graduates to "be a hero" to their patients and remember everyone who supported their journey. The class, which began medical school during the pandemic, demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability throughout their education. Over half of the graduating physicians will pursue primary care specialties, with 65% remaining in Ohio for their residencies.
🩺 Ohio physician earns prestigious national and state recognition for service excellence. Dr. Jennifer Gwilym, a Glouster native and Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine leader, received the Distinguished Fellow designation from the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians. She was also elected to the ACOFP board of directors and honored with the Ohio Osteopathic Association's Distinguished Service Award. The 2003 Heritage College graduate chairs the Department of Primary Care and will soon begin serving as interim senior associate dean of Admissions. Gwilym also maintains a clinical practice at Oakview Dermatology in Athens.
