Good morning, Athens County. The transformative power of a simple "yes" lies at the heart of Alaina Dackermann's Ohio University journey. From a timid freshman to Director of Photography covering presidential elections, her story reminds us that our greatest growth often waits just beyond our comfort zones. As she prepares to graduate, Dackermann's experience highlights how Athens becomes more than a college town—it becomes a second home for those who embrace its opportunities.

Meanwhile, Athens County's landscape continues evolving with two significant developments. Ohio University's MPA programs are creating real-world impact with impressive 30% salary increases for graduates and flexible formats for working professionals. Simultaneously, Athens County Children's Services breaks ground on a much-needed $12 million facility upgrade, replacing 50-year-old buildings with a modern, environmentally-friendly complex designed to better serve the 135 children currently in their care.

🎓 College senior discovers saying "yes" transforms fear into opportunity. Alaina Dackermann reflects on her journey from a terrified freshman to a confident soon-to-be graduate at Ohio University. Joining The Post newspaper early in her college career helped her find belonging and purpose, eventually leading to her role as Director of Photography. Through experiences covering presidential elections and traveling with the football team, she learned to stop second-guessing herself and embrace new challenges. Dackermann now considers Athens her second home, thanks to the family she found in her peers who supported her through late nights and personal growth.

🏗️ Athens County Children's Services breaks ground on a much-needed upgrade. After 50 years in outdated facilities, the agency will demolish two of its four buildings to construct a new 28,800-square-foot facility costing $12 million. The new complex will feature three connected sections—a conference center, administrative offices, and a visitation center—designed to create a safe, welcoming environment for children and families. Construction begins in April with completion expected by August 2026, addressing the growing needs of an agency that now serves 135 children in custody compared to 75 a decade ago. The environmentally-friendly building will use sustainable mass timber construction rather than traditional brick and concrete.
