Athens County • January 9, 2025

Good morning, Athens County. In a world where small businesses are increasingly replaced by corporate chains, Athens is rolling up its sleeves to write its own story. The January 22nd town hall meeting isn't just another date on the calendar - it's our community's stand for the mom-and-pop shops that give our streets their soul. From the cozy corners of Restaurant Salaam, where Middle Eastern magic has been unfolding for two decades, to the small businesses fighting to keep their doors open, we're proving that local character still matters.

And speaking of building a better Athens for everyone, our City Commission on Disabilities is kicking off 2024 with the kind of inclusive energy we need. Their upcoming meeting on January 15th reminds us that accessibility isn't just about ramps and railings - it's about creating a community where everyone has a seat at the table.

🍽️ Athens restaurant brings Middle Eastern magic to small-town Ohio. Restaurant Salaam, celebrating nearly 20 years of authentic Mediterranean and South Asian cuisine, was born from Executive Chef Hilarie Burhans' childhood experiences in Pakistan and Ethiopia. The restaurant evolved from a humble hookah café to a full-service dining establishment, now housed in a transformed automotive dealership with authentic cultural décor. Burhans prioritizes employee wellbeing with generous wages and a four-day work week, while maintaining a rotating menu of global specials that exclude Chinese and Mexican dishes to avoid competing with local establishments. The restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients and cultural authenticity shines through its carefully curated menu, from Bay of Fundy salmon to Turkish-inspired dishes.
