Westerville • August 12, 2025
Good morning, Westerville. This year marks 150 years since dynamite blasts rocked our streets during the infamous Whiskey Wars of 1875, when locals literally exploded Henry Corbin's saloon in violent protest. The irony isn't lost on anyone that our once-proclaimed "Dry Capital of the World" now boasts four breweries and even a distillery cheekily named "Whiskey War" β a testament to how dramatically communities can transform over time.
That theme of transformation continues elsewhere in our community. Jewish campus organizations at OSU are evolving their programming to create welcoming spaces for incoming students while addressing contemporary challenges. Meanwhile, the justice system delivered a stark lesson in consequences as 19-year-old Akie Benjamin received a 9.5-year prison sentence after violating probation β a harsh reminder that second chances, once squandered, often lead to severe outcomes.

π Teen car thief gets 9.5 years after violating probation. Akie Benjamin, 19, was sentenced to prison by Franklin County Judge Michael Holbrook just months after receiving community control for felonious assault and receiving stolen property. Benjamin, associated with the "Kia Boys" group responsible for vehicle thefts across central Ohio, had multiple arrests including ramming a stolen vehicle into a detective's car. His own mother previously pleaded with courts to hold him accountable, telling 10TV in 2023, "Lock him up, do something." Judge Holbrook expressed disappointment, saying Benjamin is "setting himself up for a life sentence just 10-12 years at a time."
π Jewish campus groups prepare a warm welcome for OSU students. The Schottenstein Chabad House and OSU Hillel are gearing up for fall 2025 with programs designed to create a "home away from home" for incoming freshmen. Chabad hosts welcome barbecues and has hired interns focused on freshman engagement, while Hillel offers "Fresh Fest" orientation to help new students acclimate. Since October 7, 2023, programming has evolved to address rising antisemitism, with some students becoming more proudly vocal about their Jewish identity. Both organizations balance enhanced security measures with vibrant social activities, serving thousands of Jewish students throughout the academic year.
π₯ Westerville's dynamite-filled Whiskey Wars turn 150 this year. In 1875, Henry Corbin opened a saloon in Westerville, Ohio, only to have locals protest, vandalize, and ultimately blow it up with dynamite. This violent resistance earned Westerville the nickname "The Dry Capital of the World" and set the stage for its pivotal role in the Anti-Saloon League and Prohibition movement. After remaining largely dry until 2006, Westerville now embraces alcohol culture with four breweries and a distillery ironically named "Whiskey War" that commemorates the town's tumultuous history. The transformation has revitalized Uptown Westerville into a vibrant dining and entertainment destination.
