Good morning, Westerville. Columbus is poised to join the growing movement of cities embracing innovative housing solutions, with legislation that would legalize backyard cottages in all residential areas. The proposed changes would eliminate the need for zoning variances when adding these accessory dwelling unitsβ€”potentially creating more affordable housing options while allowing older residents to remain in their beloved neighborhoods longer. City Councilmember Otto Beatty aims to have final legislation approved by October, marking a significant shift in urban housing policy.

On the public safety front, First Stop Bar and Grill in North Linden faces legal action after a disturbing pattern of violence, including multiple shootings and weapons incidents since 2023. Meanwhile, Worthington residents should prepare for citywide mosquito spraying Thursday morning following the detection of 120 positive West Nile virus pools in Franklin County this year. Health officials recommend staying indoors during spraying and eliminating standing water to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.

🏠 Columbus moves to legalize backyard cottages in all residential areas. The proposed legislation would allow Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in every residential district without requiring zoning variances. City Councilmember Otto Beatty aims to pass the final legislation by October, with the changes permitting both attached and detached units smaller than the main home. The proposal includes increasing allowed lot coverage to 65%, requiring owner occupancy in single-family districts, and prohibiting short-term rentals. Housing advocates praised the initiative for increasing affordable housing options and allowing older adults to "stay in the communities they love longer."

🍺 Violent Columbus bar faces lawsuit after years of shootings and violations. The City of Columbus is suing First Stop Bar and Grill in North Linden, citing a disturbing "history of violence" that includes two shootings, a stabbing, and multiple weapons incidents since 2023. A July shooting left one person with stomach wounds and another shot in both legs. Recent inspections uncovered moldy bar equipment, fire code violations, and liquor permit issues, while undercover agents caught the establishment selling alcohol to minors. The city's Property Action Team filed the lawsuit following these persistent public safety concerns.
