Westerville • May 28, 2025
Good morning, Westerville. Broadway is making a divine entrance at Temple Beth Shalom with their upcoming "Broadway Shabbat" on May 30. The Sharyonim Choir will transform traditional worship through beloved showtunes from "Fiddler on the Roof" to "Wicked," blending theatrical magic with spiritual celebration. Meanwhile, at 69, legendary bassist Peter Hook continues his musical time-travel expedition, performing New Order's "Get Ready" alongside his son Jack at the Bluestone—creating a poignant generational echo as he reclaims his musical legacy one album at a time.
The final plates of pasta have been served at a local institution as Monte Carlo Italian Kitchen closed its doors after 45 years of culinary tradition. Since 1979, the family-owned restaurant had been a cornerstone of Italian comfort food, from their signature sauce to beloved meatballs. While Westerville says goodbye to this long-standing establishment, the memories of countless family dinners and celebrations will continue to simmer in the community's collective heart.

🎭 Broadway tunes meet Jewish worship at Temple Beth Shalom's special event. The "Broadway Shabbat" on May 30 will feature the Sharyonim Choir performing selections from hit shows including "Fiddler on the Roof," "Wicked," and "Prince of Egypt." The free celebration, running from 6 to 7 p.m. at the New Albany temple, will be followed by a festive oneg. While there's no cost to attend this musical Shabbat experience, advance registration is required through the temple's website.
🎸 Bassist Peter Hook reclaims his musical past through time-traveling concerts. The former New Order and Joy Division member has been touring with his band the Light, performing entire albums from his previous groups following his acrimonious 2011 split with New Order. Hook will play New Order's 2001 album "Get Ready" alongside career-spanning hits at the Bluestone on May 28. Performing with his son Jack creates a poignant mirror to the past, as Jack is often the same age Peter was when originally recording these albums. At 69, Hook feels a growing urgency to complete this musical "bucket list," saying when he plays these songs, "you feel fucking 20 again."
🍝 A beloved Italian institution serves its final pasta in Powell. Monte Carlo Italian Kitchen, a family-owned restaurant established in 1979, permanently closed its doors on May 23 after announcing the decision earlier in the month. Originally called Monte Carlo Ristorante, the eatery began on Cleveland Avenue before eventually relocating to 345 W. Olentangy St. in Powell, which became its sole location after its Westerville spot quietly shuttered. Despite ownership changes and location shifts over the decades, the restaurant maintained its beloved traditional Italian favorites like Chicken Parmigiana and Italian Wedding Soup. "We will miss making the sauce, the meatballs, and all your traditional Italian favorites that brought comfort and joy to your tables," the owners shared in their farewell message.
