Vinton County • August 6, 2025
Good morning, Vinton County. Nothing turns a routine bee attack into a memorable day quite like discovering the victim has an outstanding warrant. Athens County deputies responded to reports of a man screaming and punching himself after disturbing a hive, only to find themselves making a drug-related arrest. Even K9 officer Cody got in on the action during a separate incident, earning promised treats for successfully sniffing out illegal substances during a traffic stop.
In brighter developments, a legislative change in Ohio's budget is creating new possibilities for tourism dollars. The Hocking Hills Tourism Association is launching a grant program that will support local emergency services, now that county lodging tax revenue can be used beyond just promotion. Meanwhile, the Ross County Fair is delivering quintessential summer magic, from sunset horseback practice to Abraham Lincoln impersonators mingling with fairgoers—creating memories that will last long after the midway lights dim.

🐝 Bee attack leads to drug arrest in Athens County. The Athens County Sheriff's Office responded to a man reported screaming and punching himself in the face, only to discover he had disturbed a bee hive. Deputies arrested the man after finding he had an outstanding warrant for drug possession. In other incidents, K9 officer Cody successfully detected drugs during a traffic stop, earning promises of extra treats. Deputies also handled a false alarm about gunshots at a park where children were simply playing, and responded to a barricaded man with a gun who was subsequently arrested.
🚒 Ohio tourism group launches grant to bolster emergency services. The Hocking Hills Tourism Association's new Tourism Impact Emergency Services Grant will support local emergency providers who protect both residents and visitors in Hocking County. This initiative was made possible by a recent change in Ohio's Revised Code that now allows tourism organizations to direct county lodging tax revenue beyond just promotion. Previously, these funds could only be used for promotional activities, but the passing of the Ohio budget last month expanded how tourism dollars can be allocated.
🎡 Small-town magic unfolds at the Ross County Fair. Fourteen-year-old Belle Holschuh practices horseback riding at sunset, preparing for the upcoming open horse show. Meanwhile, an Abraham Lincoln impersonator mingles with fairgoers, sharing presidential history, while young Azariah Brown feeds goats at the petting zoo. The fair offers classic midway challenges too, with five-year-old Mason Kissinger attempting the tricky Crazy Ladder game. Photographer Ty Wright captured these quintessential summer moments at the Chillicothe, Ohio fairgrounds on August 4, 2025.
