Vinton County • July 23, 2025
Good morning, Vinton County. Since 1950, the Amesville Firemen Festival has been more than just a fundraiser—it's become the heartbeat of a community. Now celebrating its 75th year, this cherished tradition continues despite the volunteer firefighter count dropping from 40 to just 10, mirroring a nationwide volunteerism decline. Yet these dedicated few handle more emergency calls than ever, embodying small-town resilience even as festival proceeds can no longer fully fund their operations.
On the governance front, the Southern Ohio Council of Governments is set to meet August 1st, continuing their vital support for developmental disability services across 13 counties. Meanwhile, the justice system remains active with Gallia County's grand jury indicting 18 individuals on charges ranging from felonious assault to drug trafficking—a reminder that behind our region's pastoral beauty, the complex machinery of local government and law enforcement continues its essential work.

🔥 Amesville's 75-year Firemen Festival celebrates community despite firefighter shortage. The annual event that began in 1950 as a fundraiser for the Ames-Bern Volunteer Fire Department has evolved into a cherished community reunion. Fire Chief Brad Maxwell notes that while they still raise some money, rising costs make it impossible to fund operations through the festival alone. The department has seen its volunteer numbers plummet from about 40 firefighters in the 1980s to just 10 today, reflecting a national trend of declining volunteerism. Despite these challenges, the department handles more emergency calls than ever, continuing its role as a vital part of Amesville's community fabric.
