Vinton County • April 8, 2025
Good morning, Vinton County. Behind every community are the quiet heroes who shape its character, and Larry "Tom" Stevens embodied that spirit for 76 remarkable years. The Vietnam-era veteran who worked tirelessly from his youth at the Dairy Corner through 27 years at Southern Ohio Coal Company—and even into retirement—has left a legacy of dedication that reminds us what makes our county special. His passing on April 2 marks the end of a chapter for a man who balanced hard work with his passions for cattle, dirt track racing, and family.
While we honor those who came before, opportunity beckons for our future leaders. Gallia Academy's $1,000 scholarships await graduating seniors who submit applications by April 25, and the community continues rallying around therapy K-9 Officer Blu, the Wellston Police Department's "ray of sunshine" who's fighting back after a serious accident. The beloved therapy dog's recovery represents the resilience that defines our tight-knit community.

🐕 Therapy K-9 Officer Blu fights for life after car accident. The beloved Wellston Police Department therapy dog was struck by a vehicle on March 26 and rushed to MedVet in Columbus for critical care. Surgeons successfully repaired Blu's bladder tear and addressed a hip hematoma without needing screws or plates. After three years serving the community and schools as "a ray of sunshine," Blu is now recovering well with hopes of continuing his recovery at home soon.
