🐼 Panda persistence

Good morning, Union County. Remember the panda-monium that swept through Columbus in 1992? After an eight-year diplomatic marathon involving even Vice President Bush, the Columbus Zoo finally welcomed Xing Xing and Qin Qin for a four-month stay that attracted nearly a million visitors. That persistence—navigating complex international relations and donating $300,000 to conservation—reminds us that sometimes the most worthwhile achievements require extraordinary patience.

In other local milestones, Benjamin Logan High School just celebrated its 55th commencement, with three co-valedictorians inspiring their 140 classmates with messages of hope and resilience. And while these graduates step into their futures, we're all stepping into a surprisingly cool start to summer—with temperatures hovering in the 60s instead of the typical 70s. Fortunately for warm-weather enthusiasts, the thermometer should climb back to normal by early June.

🐼 Columbus Zoo fought for years to host giant pandas in 1992. After navigating diplomatic hurdles and legal battles with the World Wildlife Fund, the zoo successfully brought two three-year-old male pandas, Xing Xing and Qin Qin, from China for a four-month exhibition. The journey began in 1984 when China shifted from gifting pandas to loaning them for fees, with Columbus finally securing a commitment in 1987 with help from then-Vice President Bush. Despite losing its accreditation for a year and donating $300,000 to panda conservation, the zoo's perseverance allowed nearly a million visitors to see these rare animals.

Superintendent John Scheu praised the graduates' achievements as they prepare to enter military service, the workforce, or higher education under the district's "3E's" initiative: Enlist, Employ, Enroll.

❄️ Central Ohio's summer kickoff will be surprisingly cool. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts below-normal temperatures through the end of May, with highs mostly in the 60s instead of the typical mid-to-upper 70s. This cooler pattern represents a 10-20 degree departure from seasonal norms for late May. Relief is on the horizon, however, as temperatures are expected to return to normal or even above-normal levels by early June. The outlook for June suggests slightly higher-than-normal temperatures, bringing back the 70s and 80s that summer-lovers have been waiting for.
