🌊 Dam transformation

Summit County • September 5, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. After a century of damming the Cuyahoga River's natural flow, a massive environmental restoration is finally underway. Officials have kicked off the historic Gorge Dam removal with a $10 million federal project to clear over 850,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment – one of the largest Great Lakes Legacy Act cleanups to date. The ambitious two-season dredging operation will ultimately return this iconic waterway to its free-flowing glory for the first time since your great-grandparents' era.

While nature reclaims its course, human nature continues making headlines across the county. The Barberton police blotter reads like a small-town sitcom script, complete with parking lot strip shows and book-destroying jail antics. And over in Sharon Township, renovation plans hit a literal roadblock when a vehicle crashed into the nearly-completed gazebo, leaving Memorial Day ceremonies displaced and township officials waiting on materials with no completion timeline in sight.

🌊 Historic Gorge Dam removal begins with massive sediment cleanup project. Officials gathered at Gorge Metro Park to kick off the removal of over 850,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment behind the dam. Funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, this $10 million federal project will restore the Cuyahoga River to its natural, free-flowing state for the first time in over a century. The sediment will be dredged over two construction seasons before the dam itself is removed in a subsequent phase. Multiple partners including the EPA, local governments, and FirstEnergy are collaborating on what officials call one of the largest Great Lakes Legacy Act sediment removals to date.

🏗️ Sharon Circle renovations stalled with no completion date in sight. The project, which was 99% complete, suffered a setback when a car crashed into the gazebo on May 5, forcing Memorial Day ceremonies to relocate. Township officials can't provide a timeline because they're waiting for materials to arrive. Meanwhile, the Akron Area YMCA earned prestigious Praesidium accreditation for implementing the highest industry standards in abuse prevention. The three-year accreditation demonstrates the organization's commitment to protecting those in their care through rigorous safety practices across eight operational areas.
