Good morning, Summit County. The gates of opportunity are swinging wide open this month as METRO Regional Transit Authority launches free bus rides to the Akron Zoo. This timely partnership coincides perfectly with the zoo's Community Days, giving Summit County residents both free transportation and free admission throughout September. As Allyson Boyd from the zoo aptly put it, "Everyone belongs at your Akron Zoo" – regardless of how you arrive.

Elsewhere in Akron, democracy takes center stage as eight school board candidates prepare to present their platforms at a September 11 community meeting. Meanwhile, a sobering reminder of everyday heroism comes with news of Ar'Mon Covington, who lost his life after standing up against harassment at a local gas station. His alleged killer, Damario McCall, was arrested Saturday, with US Marshals recovering a loaded firearm during the apprehension.
