Meanwhile, a sobering reminder of everyday heroism comes with news of Ar'Mon Covington, who lost his life after standing up against harassment at a local gas station. His alleged killer, Damario McCall, was arrested Saturday, with US Marshals recovering a loaded firearm during the apprehension.

🚌 Free bus rides to Akron Zoo open doors for all. Starting this month, METRO Regional Transit Authority is offering free transportation on Direct and ADA routes when zoo admission tickets are shown. The partnership coincides with the zoo's Community Days, giving Summit County residents free zoo admission throughout September. "Everyone belongs at your Akron Zoo, whether you arrive by car, bike or METRO bus," said Allyson Boyd from the zoo. This continues a history of collaboration between the organizations, including previous partnerships for back-to-school events and the upcoming Boo at the Zoo.

Eight candidates vying for positions on the Akron Public School Board will present their platforms at a September 11 civic gathering. The event, organized by Yours and Mine Akron United Communities, will take place at Robinson Community Learning Center from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Diana Autry, Cynthia Blake, Gwen Bryant, Gregory Harrison, Carla Jackson, Nathan Jarosz, Karmaya Kelly, and Phil Montgomery. A light dinner will be provided for those attending the community-focused election event.
🔫 Hero gunned down after confronting man harassing women at gas station. Damario McCall, 41, was arrested Saturday for allegedly killing 26-year-old Ar'Mon Covington at an Akron BP station on July 5. Authorities say Covington challenged McCall's harassment of women before McCall shot him multiple times and fled the scene. US Marshals captured McCall without incident at a residence on Ardella Avenue, recovering a loaded firearm during the arrest. "A repeat, violent fugitive and a firearm are now off the streets," stated U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott following the arrest.
