Good morning, Summit County. Four-legged crimefighters are officially on the job! Summit County Sheriff's Office just welcomed a talented quartet of K-9 deputies—Hero, Bingo, Mara, and Luna—who've completed months of rigorous training. While three of these furry officers will tackle narcotics detection and tracking at the jail, Luna's explosives expertise will keep travelers safe at Akron-Canton Airport.
The power struggle continues in Barberton, where residents fed up with persistent outages have sparked a PUCO investigation into FirstEnergy's service. While the utility blames trees and osprey nests for the disruptions, locals remain skeptical. On a brighter note, the University of Akron's swimming and diving program is making academic waves, with six standout athletes earning prestigious Scholar All-American honors for excelling both in the classroom and the pool.

🐾 Summit County welcomes four new crime-fighting K-9s to the force. The Sheriff's Office introduced the furry deputies to the community on July 7 after months of training. Three of the dogs—Hero, Bingo, and Mara—are trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and article searches, while Luna specializes in explosives detection. Each K-9 is paired with a dedicated handler, with three working at the jail and Luna stationed at the Akron-Canton Airport to assist the Bomb Squad when needed.
⚡ Barberton residents demand answers for constant power outages. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has launched an investigation into FirstEnergy after Barberton Mayor William Judge requested action on behalf of frustrated residents. Over 20,000 customers lost power during the latest June 23 outage, prompting citizens to create a petition citing food waste and major disruptions to daily life. FirstEnergy blamed the outages on osprey nests and trees, claiming trees cause 70% of outages, but city council members questioned why the power grid is failing now when birds and hot summers have always been present. This marks the second PUCO investigation in the region, as nearby Lakewood has experienced similar frequent outages.
🏊♀️ Akron swimming stars shine in classroom and pool. Six members of the University of Akron swimming and diving team earned spots on the prestigious CSCAA Scholar All-American Team for the 2024-25 season. Abigail Daniel led the way with first-team honors, while Felicia Klintemar, Elizabeth Noble, Laurel Smith, Madelyn Gatrall, and Rebecca Reid secured second-team recognition. The first-team selection requires both a minimum 3.5 GPA and participation in national championships, while second-team honorees must maintain the same GPA standard while meeting qualifying time standards or diving zone qualifications.
