Good morning, Summit County. Downtown Akron's cultural landscape is about to get more whimsical as the Funk Art museum reopens its doors on May 1, bringing Clayton Bailey's imaginative world of magical creatures and robots back to life. With new Saturday hours aligning perfectly with neighboring attractions, this free museum strengthens the city's growing cultural corridor—creating an artistic pathway that connects Lock 3 park, Akron Soul Train, and beyond.

History comes alive in unexpected ways across our community this season. A simple poker chip with a Star of David led collector Nadav Shaari to uncover the fascinating story of the Far East Club, a Jewish speakeasy that served as both gambling den and vital community space in 1920s Akron. Meanwhile, the legacy of local abolitionist John Brown receives special recognition with a 225th birthday celebration on May 9, complete with a monument hike, historical presentations, and birthday cake at the Brown House—rain or shine.

✡️ A poker chip unveiled a hidden Jewish speakeasy's fascinating story. Collector Nadav Shaari discovered chips marked with Stars of David that led him to uncover the Far East Club, a Prohibition-era gambling den operated by Russian-Jewish immigrant brothers in 1920s Akron. The cleverly named establishment served as more than just a gambling spot—it became a vital community space for Jewish immigrants facing social limitations. Through interviews with locals, including 92-year-old Lois whose uncle dealt cards there, Shaari pieced together this remarkable tale of immigrant ingenuity that continued until a dramatic police raid in 1938.
