🎭 Budget balancing act

Summit County • April 3, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. The numbers behind Akron's newly passed $798 million budget tell a remarkable story of fiscal creativity—trimming 2% overall while still investing in what matters most. Mayor Malik's strategic approach maintains public safety staffing while tackling the $13 million gap left by expiring pandemic relief funds. Meanwhile, the city's also positioning itself for potential national recognition, joining 19 other communities vying for the prestigious All-America City award that could arrive just in time for Akron's Bicentennial celebrations.

While city leaders balance spreadsheets, Firestone Theatre students are mastering Sondheim's challenging "Merrily We Roll Along." The production, which cleverly moves backward in time, features 27 talented performers and a 19-piece student orchestra tackling one of musical theater's most complex works. The show's themes of friendship and life choices resonate deeply with the senior cast members as they prepare for their own futures—catch their performances April 10-13 in the Linda B. Kersker Auditorium.

💰 Akron passes $798 million budget with strategic cuts and investments. Mayor Shammas Malik's 2025 operating budget represents a 2% decrease from last year while maintaining focus on public safety and core city services. The budget includes targeted increases for after-school programs, police oversight, litter cleanup, and mowing services, offset by reductions in property tax payments and street lighting costs. City officials are working to address a $13 million shortfall caused by the loss of federal pandemic relief funds while maintaining staffing levels for 488 police officers and 402 firefighter/medics. The budget also includes strategic investments in childcare initiatives, violence intervention, and youth programming.
