🐾 Akron's furry friends

Summit County • February 26, 2025

Good morning, Summit County. They say every dog has its day, and thanks to Rubber City Rescue, more of Akron's four-legged friends will get their chance at a better tomorrow. In a city known for its resilience and community spirit, this grassroots effort to transform a Kenmore Boulevard building into a haven for strays perfectly captures what makes our area special - neighbors stepping up when they see a need.

While some folks are working to protect our furry friends, others are keeping local law enforcement busy with less noble pursuits. A recent trading card heist at Meijer reads like something from a Hollywood script, minus the Ocean's Eleven sophistication. Meanwhile, Akron's commitment to balanced police oversight continues as the city seeks new watchdogs for its Citizens' Police Oversight Board - because building trust requires both vigilance and diverse perspectives.

🐕 Akron rescue group opens new shelter to save city's abandoned dogs. Rubber City Rescue is transforming a building on Kenmore Boulevard into a temporary haven with 15 kennels for stray dogs, addressing a critical capacity crisis in local shelters. The facility will give police and dog wardens 24/7 access to drop off strays, filling a crucial gap since Summit County's shelter is consistently full. President Laura Lawson currently houses rescued dogs in her home due to lack of shelter space, but the new facility should open within two months. While not a permanent solution, this community-driven initiative aims to prevent strays from facing dangerous situations on Akron's streets.
