🚧 Road woes galore

Stark County • April 29, 2025

Good morning, Stark County. Canton's infrastructure is taking a beating this week, with not one but two significant road closures disrupting daily commutes. Cherry Avenue NE remains shut down until this evening following a dramatic single-vehicle crash that took out multiple utility poles, while 15th Street partially collapsed near Cleveland Avenue on Friday, forcing school traffic to find alternate routes. The steel plate currently covering the sunken roadway stands as a temporary Band-Aid while engineers investigate the cause.

Amid these transportation challenges, the Red Cross is focusing on a different kind of safety measure. This Saturday, volunteers will fan out across Massillon and Louisville with a life-saving mission: installing 250 smoke alarms in vulnerable homes. Part of the nationwide "Sound the Alarm" initiative, these small devices have made a massive difference since 2014, reportedly saving over 2,300 lives across the country—a bright spot of good news amid our road woes.

🚧 Canton's 15th Street partially collapses, closing traffic near Cleveland Avenue. The roadway failure occurred Friday, prompting city officials to place a steel plate over the sunken area while engineers investigate the cause. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. Access to the city school district's Early Learning Center at Schreiber must now be made via 16th Street instead of the usual Cleveland Avenue route. City departments are currently working on plans for repairs, though no timeline has been announced.
